Advent 2015 – Day 9 – The Lord of Peace

advent2aI will die down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.  Psalm 4:8

We’ve all heard the news, it’s rather hard to avoid.  The world in which we live is a scary place these days.  As you tuck your children into bed at night, you wonder if they will ever have the chance to live in peace.  When you lay your own head on your pillow, your mind races with all the dangers in the world around you.

If there has ever been a time when we need peace, it is now; and that is exactly what God has promised.   Shalom—peace.  King David wrote this Psalm as he was being pursued by his enemy, his own son no less, who sought to overthrow his throne.  Though his life was in peril, the king had such peace that he could lie down and sleep with no fear.  It wasn’t his army that kept his heart at rest and it wasn’t the safety of the strong palace walls, for David was in the wilderness as he fled.  David’s peace and security was in the Lord alone.

You and I can have this same peace today.  Despite the turmoil in the world around us, we can know the same security David experienced if we are also trusting in God.  He is our Mighty God, and nothing in heaven or earth can separate us from His love (Romans 8:38-39). He is our Fortress, our strong and secure dwelling place, and He is the Defender who stands guard over you and me with His angel armies by His side.

So rest well tonight beloved, your God and King—Jehovah Shalom, The Lord of Peace—is watching over you.
